Anakin Skywalker's/ Darth Vader's Self Efficacy

Image
Today, I will be looking at Anakin Skywalker and his Dark Side Persona of Darth Vader through one half of the Expectancy Value Theory. This half of the theory pertains to the expectancy component and even more focused through Self Efficacy. Self-Efficacy is a term that has varied definitions, but they all generally say that Self-Efficacy is “one’s belief about what one can do”.       High Self-Efficacy is something in the Star Wars universe and in the case of Anakin-Skywalker doesn’t seem to be lacking in their characters. You could describe Anakin Skywalker as someone who is arrogant and thinks highly of themselves. When we first meet Anakin back on Tatooine even as a slave he has very high Self-Efficacy because of his ability to fix and repair droids and machinery. Not to mention he is the only human who can survive a Pod Race, but his rival Sebulba has been a gut check to his ability to win a race.  Anakin receiving great Praise when he wins his first pod race       The beg

Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader viewed through Self-Determination Theory

Anakin Skywalker/ Darth Vader and SD Theory                 Looking at the story and character of Anakin Skywalker through Self-Determination Theory, and more specifically through Cognitive Evaluation Theory we will get a better picture of how this “chosen one” who was said to “Destroy the Sith! Not join them!” did so and it was because he was deprived in major areas of his life the 3 basic needs. Cognitive Evaluation Theory states that people have 3 basic needs that need to be met: autonomy, competence, relatedness. When these needs are met people will engage in activities. These elements needed for intrinsic motivation and the supports needed in a person’s environment are important to understanding Anakin’s Journey into becoming Darth Vader. Anakin Skywalker was born a slave on the Hutt Controlled Planet of Tatooine working for Watto in his junk dealing business. Here we see that Anakin has almost no agency and control in his life and therefore hates it. The only source of competence

Character and Context

ANAKIN SKYWALKER/Darth Vader       I will be doing a Character Analysis of Anakin Skywalker's motivations and Emotions. Anakin Skywalker is the "Chosen One" of the Star Wars Universe. George Lucas said that the Main Story of Star Wars is his tragedy. Anakin was born a slave on the desert planet of Tatooine and has no father. His story begins when he is found by Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn who sets out to train him as his apprentice. He eventually is trained by the Jedi Order and becomes a Jedi Knight but falls to the Dark Side and becomes Darth Vader. In this world of Star Wars, there is the Force of which is the spiritual energy field that binds everything in the Galaxy. There is a Light Side of good and a Dark Side of Evil. This is a story of how someone who is told he would be the one to bring complete balance to the galaxy treads both paths to bring that balance. I will be looking at what sort of motivations and emotions guided Anakin through his story.
