Anakin and Vader's Guilt

Image
Hello Everyone! It’s a me! I’m back! Welcome back to my blog studying Anakin Skywalker/ Darth Vader through different aspects of motivation and emotion theories. Today we are going to be looking at a specific emotion of Anakin’s and Vader’s which I think is their strongest, their guilt. Lewis describes shame as being internal and originating from specific behavior failure. Writing it as “I made a mistake, and I can fix this”. There are some key moments in Anakin’s and Vader’s story, mostly when he was Anakin that make him a guilt-prone person. Anakin Shedding a Tear after killing the Separatists on Mustafar  From what we understand about those who are guilt-prone they have a strong desire to make things right, and oh boy does Anakin and Vader share that desire. I believe this comes from Anakin’s life being told that he is the Chosen One and that his very purpose is to bring balance to the Force and to make things “right” on a galactic scale. What we also can see as someone who is motiv

Anakin's and Vader's Attributions

Image
Welcome back everyone to my Blog! I hope everyone is doing alright and having a good time during this rough period of life. Today I am going to be talking about Attribution Theory and looking at Anakin and Vader through this lens. For those who do not know Attribution seeks to explain why people feel compelled to understand why things happen in their life. This occurs when someone attempts to determine the cause of an event, effect, or behavior. There are three factors for Attribution Theory: Locus of control, Controllability, and Stability. This is all focusing on Causes, so it is referred to as Causal Attribution Theory. This is going to be tricky to do because in the Star Wars universe there is the concept of the Force. The basic gist of the Force is that is an energy field that binds the whole Universe together. There is the Living Force comprised of all the energies of every single lifeform in the galaxy and the Cosmic Force which is the binding power of everything throughout

Anakin's/Vader's Goal Complexities

Image
Greetings everyone! Welcome back to my character study of Anakin Skywalker/ Darth Vader of the Star Wars Universe. Today we will be looking at his Goals and the complexity of his goals. Looking at the factors behind his goals like his reasons, what kind of goals, and his achievement motive. As I said in my previous posts Anakin’s number goal was to become the greatest Jedi Ever in galactic history so that he could fulfill the prophecy of the Chosen One. This Prophecy states “ A Chosen One shall come, born of no father, and through him will ultimate balance in the Force be restored.” Now whether you believe Luke or Anakin is the Chosen, this blog follows the creator’s mindset and which George Lucas himself has stated that Anakin is the chosen one and that the Jedi interpreted the prophecy incorrectly. Now Anakin’s secondary goal was to have a life beyond that of an ordinary Jedi, which was realized through his secret marriage with Padme Amidala.  To Look at Anakin’s/ Vader’s Goals we a

Anakin's/Vader's Values and Motivation

Image
Hello Folks, welcome back to the Blog! Today’s post we will look back again at our favorite Chosen One of the Star Wars Universe. This time we will continue to look at our hero and villain through the lens of Expectancy-Value Theory but more of a focus on the Value Aspect of the theory. So, Anakin’s values for himself are all included in interests, reasons, goals, utility value, and cost/benefit. For Anakin’s goals, we have talked about how he wants to become the greatest Jedi ever in recorded history and to fulfill his love with his secret wife Padme Amidala. For Anakin’s interests that would be keeping the peace, building, creating, fixing, repairing, and Padme. His reasons would be the Jedi Code, the Prophecy of the Chosen One, and his deep feelings for those he loves. For his utility value, Anakin is constantly seeking what is relevant for his goal of fulfilling the prophecy of the Chosen One or for Protecting Padme. His most cost/benefit value is about seeking feedback fro

Anakin Skywalker's/ Darth Vader's Self Efficacy

Image
Today, I will be looking at Anakin Skywalker and his Dark Side Persona of Darth Vader through one half of the Expectancy Value Theory. This half of the theory pertains to the expectancy component and even more focused through Self Efficacy. Self-Efficacy is a term that has varied definitions, but they all generally say that Self-Efficacy is “one’s belief about what one can do”.       High Self-Efficacy is something in the Star Wars universe and in the case of Anakin-Skywalker doesn’t seem to be lacking in their characters. You could describe Anakin Skywalker as someone who is arrogant and thinks highly of themselves. When we first meet Anakin back on Tatooine even as a slave he has very high Self-Efficacy because of his ability to fix and repair droids and machinery. Not to mention he is the only human who can survive a Pod Race, but his rival Sebulba has been a gut check to his ability to win a race.  Anakin receiving great Praise when he wins his first pod race       The beg

Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader viewed through Self-Determination Theory

Image
Anakin Skywalker/ Darth Vader and SD Theory                 Looking at the story and character of Anakin Skywalker through Self-Determination Theory, and more specifically through Cognitive Evaluation Theory we will get a better picture of how this “chosen one” who was said to “Destroy the Sith! Not join them!” did so and it was because he was deprived in major areas of his life the 3 basic needs. Cognitive Evaluation Theory states that people have 3 basic needs that need to be met: autonomy, competence, relatedness. When these needs are met people will engage in activities. These elements needed for intrinsic motivation and the supports needed in a person’s environment are important to understanding Anakin’s Journey into becoming Darth Vader. Anakin Skywalker was born a slave on the Hutt Controlled Planet of Tatooine working for Watto in his junk dealing business. Here we see that Anakin has almost no agency and control in his life and therefore hates it. The only source of competence

Character and Context

Image
ANAKIN SKYWALKER/Darth Vader       I will be doing a Character Analysis of Anakin Skywalker's motivations and Emotions. Anakin Skywalker is the "Chosen One" of the Star Wars Universe. George Lucas said that the Main Story of Star Wars is his tragedy. Anakin was born a slave on the desert planet of Tatooine and has no father. His story begins when he is found by Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn who sets out to train him as his apprentice. He eventually is trained by the Jedi Order and becomes a Jedi Knight but falls to the Dark Side and becomes Darth Vader. In this world of Star Wars, there is the Force of which is the spiritual energy field that binds everything in the Galaxy. There is a Light Side of good and a Dark Side of Evil. This is a story of how someone who is told he would be the one to bring complete balance to the galaxy treads both paths to bring that balance. I will be looking at what sort of motivations and emotions guided Anakin through his story.
